It distorts economic reality, which includes things like motivation, ability to manufacture goods and the overall work ethic... and that may filter over into the education system and general morals of the country.

Life becomes easier for the freeloaders & they lose their edge. Much of our manufacturing base has been transferred overseas, along with the expertise & know how that goes along with it. Although we have morphed into a service economy service levels seem to have fallen over the years, despite huge gains in productivity aids such as the internet, computers, AI, machinery and so on.
