You can hate moderates all you want, but there are plenty who are not hard left, and don't like Trump. Trick for a third party candidate would be to see if they can get conservatives who don't like Trump, true moderates, and democrats who don't like either the far left direction of the party of the current leadership. There are many disgruntled former democrats and republicans who are looking for someone new. This changes if either the Republican party goes more conservative, or if the democrats find a better leader.
