I'm confused - again - someone explain

In game number 34 - NCAA tournament - Gates had a freshman on the court in crunch time who only played 5 minutes per game for the previous 33 games.

Was Gates keeping him on the bench all season so opponents couldn't scout him and then he could spring a surprise on the opponent in the biggest game of the year?

He may well be a good player but why wait until the tournament to finally put him on the court?

Perkins, Robinson, Crews and Warrick had 13 turnovers in part because instead of switching on every screen Drake was coming off the screener and doubling the dribbler. Why didn't we plant a player at the free throw line and and run backdoor cuts? That would have brought that to a screeching halt. Basketball 101.
