We had been reducing tariffs for 50 years until Trump 1 with no major trade wars and a process to challenge various tariffs.

We also now have a president using tariffs as an economic sanction on other issues as well.

As 90 pointed below. Our average tariff is 1%. China is 4%. But I guess Trump feels the need to go to 30% or more to equal that out?

And the last sentence was in jest because Trump believes the trade deficit needs to be zero.

To get to a zero trade deficit, he will have to increase and maintain higher tariffs relative to others.
