I was an MU student in the late '70s and early '80s. That was a time when I thought the athletic program was really about to take off.
We'd hired a new head football coach (Powers) who came in bragging about how he came here to win the Big 8 and go to the Orange Bowl. He started off with a 3-0 win an Notre Dame. Little did we realize that he'd never do better than the 8-4 record that season.
That was also when we got the top two MO recruits in basketball (Stipanovich and Sunvold) plus a transfer from SLU (Frazier) and won the Big 8 four straight years but never came close to a Final Four.
Even the baseball and women's basketball teams were good. The women won a couple of Big 8 titles bus usually lost early in the NCAA tournament. No CWS trip for baseball.
For a variety of reasons, MU athletics didn't take off as I expected they would.
Hopefully, the resurgence of the football and men's basketball, along with the hiring of a new women's basketball coach, will start a better trend for us.
