So there was a technicality that he had cancer and wasn't directly involved in all decisions in the 1989 season.

Your point is still complete idiot material. He was, on paper, the head coach, and his team made the Sweet 16, so people would not have been disappointed with him in a similar fashion to Gates. Further, as I said, he won a conference title a couple years prior.
