The reason so many struggle in games is because after mastering the basic skills the drills stop - advanced drills are not developed to emulate game conditions but instead simple drills that have already been mastered are pointlessly repeated.
Brady Cook for example, simply could not check down, and we saw these same pathetic videos with him in them too, cushioned helmet, slow-motion drop back, pass to an open receiver who easily catches it and runs down the field with that ridiculous high-stepping like real!
What he needed was drills that forced him to check off his reads and under increasing pressure, and with increasingly complex safety recovery as well.
Instead we saw the thing game after game, staring down receivers and when the pocket broke down running for his life.
How do I know the drilling was suspect? He never got better.
