Which will mean in the tournament a lot will depend on who we face. The good news is that we don’t have to worry about making the tournament, we even more importantly we are good enough to beat any opponent on a given day while as MU fans we will worry about losing to any opponent.
The two developments that are problematic that have evolved since that post is that now it is not only small quick guards that give us trouble, nearly anyone can dribble penetrate on us and we can’t seem to keep anyone in front. And last game we had the troubling emergence of really weird rotations and seemingly no roles this late in the season.
But when it’s all said and done if you look back on a season and your ‘rough patch’ is a 2 game road losing streak in conference play you had a pretty smooth season. I like our chances, Bates is a good leader if we give him a chance to lead and Perkins provides veteran pg play if we give him a chance to play, and Mitchell is a poor man’s Doug Smith if we remember to feed him the ball. Great outside shooting from multiple guys. Tons of depth and flexibility and can beat you a variety of ways. We just need to remember how to defend and Gates needs to figure out the rotations.
I think we get things figured and go on a decent tourney run. I’d say Sweet Sixteen, with the potential to go farther. Should be fun, this is a fun team to watch especially when they are playing well. I think they rise to the moment, and I think Bates becomes a modern version of Byron Irvin (instead of Tyron Lee). I’ll probably pick them to make the national championship game in my bracket, but it won’t be the first time I’ve done that and oddly that approach hasn’t resulted in me winning many bracket contests
