Roper was very highly regarded recruit.
Freshman were not eligible to play when he came to Mizzou.
Hie backed up Terry Mcmillian as a sophomore. Mizzou went 9-2 that season behind Mcmillian. They beat Michigan soundly in Ann Arbor in early October, but lost later that season to Colorado in Boulder.
In the Orange Bowly they held Penn State to 10 points, but were stone walled by the Penn State defemse. They threw seven interceiptions (if memory serves), five by
Terry McMillian and two by Roper in relief of McMillian.
I was fortunate to be at both games.
If memory serves, the following season was Devine's last at Mizzou. The Tigers suffered a lot of graduation losses from the 1969 team and Joe Moore, who had 1,312 yards rushing in 1969, was hobbled by injuries much of the year.
Beginning in late January 1970 through late September 1973 I was on active duty in the U.S. Army and stationed with the 3rd Armored Division in Frankfurt, West Germany helping to keep the Russian tanks out of downtown
frankfurt. There wasn't a lot of information available about Mizzou football, so I not very knowledgable about Onofrio's first few seasons at Mizzou.
