Any decent software program like the mentioned TurboTax or even FreeTaxUSA will work for almost every return that is filed. Unless you are uber rich and are filing with many business interests and tax shelter companies, those programs keep up with all the law changes and will work fine for 99.999% of returns.

The main reason to consult with a CPA is to get tax advice and design tax strategies, which those programs do do not do very well. And those are certainly very valid reasons. But for just preparation, it is not necessary.
