underlying problem. The Royals have local broadcast revenue in the $20M - $40M range. I cannot quickly find the exact amount.
Compare that the the Dodgers, Yankees & Mets who have deals worth 10x that. Those teams can pay one or two players more than the Royals can their entire roster.
For those that say the owners should just open their checkbooks and pay more for a competitive team that's simply stupid. Businessmen who can pay hundreds of millions for a sports franchise did not get rich by constantly bleeding money. Even if they chose to do so like Ewing Kauffman did his last few years it is not sustainable. Finally, why should they have to lose millions of dollars to compete with the 'haves' that are playing in the exact same league.
The NFL realized sixty years ago that they are marketing the competition, not the teams. Yes, some NFL teams are naturally worth more than others but a well run franchise can compete every year in the NFL. That is not true in MLB.
