When I was at MU in the early 80s, it was one of the first competitive WBB programs in the nation. Not great, not a powerhouse. But good enough to win the Big 8 a few times and have a league player of the year. Ranked just about every year. But that was the same time the men's team was winning four straight Big 8 titles.
I remember the year after Stipo and Sunvold graduated, the men finished last in the conference but still set an attendance record. The women were Top Ten for most of the year but still struggled to draw crowds.
If MU's WBB team was a consistent contender like South Carolina or UConn, would it be more appealing to fans? It was only slightly better during Sophie's tenure.
I could be wrong, but it just seems that WBB isn't popular in the state -- with MO State and its two Final Fours being an exception. And it's been a while since then, even.
