in football"
Do you realize how ridiculous that statement is for a program like Mizzou? (or any mid-tier P4 school, for that matter?)
Your argument is that Gates should be celebrated for not going 0-19 again, which is absurd.
In basketball, we should expect 23 wins on average, with occasional 25-30 win seasons (i.e. a coach like Haith, on average).
In football, we should expect 7-8 wins per year, on average, with occasional 10+ win seasons.
Those are reasonable expectations for a school like Mizzou.
SEC basketball is finally as good as SEC football, this year, but it's always generally easier to compete in basketball. That's why tiny little schools like Gonzaga & Marquette can be competitive. Those schools could NEVER compete in football, however, since it takes way more than 2-3 players to be competitive (or a lucky night from behind the arc to pull off a major upset).
I'm a bigger Mizzou fan than you could ever comprehend, and believe it or not, I'm rooting for Gates to succeed. I was even *more critical* of Kim Anderson, but I rooted for Mizzou in every one of his games, as well.
