Bend? ND was 4-0, #7 in the country while Mizzou was 2-3 and lost the week before 62-0 to Nebraska in Lincoln. Missouri shocked the Irish, and the entire college football world with a 30-26 upset.

In those pre-ESPN days, college football fans got scores primarily through radio, or the sports section in the Sunday newspaper. Sports casters around the country could not believe that lowly Missouri had beaten the mighty Irish and repeatedly asked AP and UPI to confirm the score.
