First, let’s hope Veatch already has a search process in place and already has identified a short list of who to go after, and secured sufficient funds to hire a qualified coach.
Some target groups:
1. Current successful P4 head coaches
2. Top assistant from a good P4 team ready to make the jump to head coach
3. Current successful mid major head coaches
4. Current unemployed former P4 head coaches
A bonus would be a qualified coach from Pingetons “coaching tree”. However, she doesn’t have a coaching tree. She doesn’t even have a malnourished dying shrub, because the list of assistants who have served under her is a collection of mediocrities who will never ever be a head coach anywhere. So that’s out.
Sure, there could be a wild card at the end of the season, a good coach who is let go. But Veatch can’t afford to wait around for that. He needs to identify realistic targets now.
I don’t disagree that Miller and Harper should be given prime attention, and they qualify in groups 3 and 4 above. But who else to add to the short list?
Group 1: Pickings are slim here. You look at the top 25-30 teams in the country and it’s hard to find a single one who might come here. Some people here have mentioned the K State coach, who has ties to the state. Could we offer enough money to get them interested?
Group 2: No idea, not up on the top assistants at quality programs, but I’d be willing to give one a shot over a current head coach. Even though many will prefer someone with head coaching experience.
Group 3: Miller is in the group. Who else? Creighton is the only mid major I can think of who has had a qualify program, is that worth going after?
Group 4: Harper is in there. Who else? When you look at recent coaching changes the only one that jumps out at me besides Harper is Elzy from Kentucky, who was replaced by the excellent VT coach this year. She at least knows the SEC and could recruit here. And she would clearly be an upgrade from Pingeton.
Havnt even mentioned getting a current SEC coach to come here. I consider Pingeton to be the worst SEC coach, by a large margin, and she will be leaving the program in shambles, with 2 consecutive nearly non existent recruiting classes. So what current SEC coach would even want to come here?
