why the SEC was willing to invite us. Specifically, MU is the flagship of a relatively large state (with 2 major metros), has a rich tradition in sports, and borders 3 other SEC states (4 with Oklahoma).
However, A&M was the catalyst for expansion, and MU was added because the SEC needed to round out the divisions.
If the SEC had 11 teams at the time (e.g. like the B1G prior to adding NU) and therefore only needed 1 team to get to an even 12, then it would have stopped after adding A&M and Mizzou never would have been invited.
Some refer to this as a "filler" addition, since the bar for admission is lowered (slightly) because the conference immediately needs another member to round out its divisions.
Mizzou was the best available option at the time for that purpose.
