I don't think anyone's saying that the non-con has to be ALL ranked teams. But it needs to be better than it has been. Just playing Memphis, KU and IL isn't enough. A strong non-con is important because it will still matter to our overall record (and chances of an NCAA bid) if we don't do well in the SEC. Let's say we finish 9-9 or 8-10 in the SEC. A stronger non-con balances that out (assuming we have at least a .500 record there).
We also didn't play in any of the tournaments that would have given us a chance to play a few games against better competition.
As a fan or a season ticket holder, I certainly would like to see more home non-con games against better teams. But maybe I'm in the minority on that.
I think it's fair to say that we should be playing at least half of our non-con games against Power Four (or is it Five) teams.
The irony is that we had better non-con schedules when Stewart and Snyder were here. Not so much since.
I can't believe that true fans get excited -- or find any real value -- in playing teams like Howard, Eastern Washington, Mississippi Valley State, Pacific, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Lindenwood. Do any of those games help prepare us for the SEC? They certainly didn't last season.
There could be a financial aspect to this, in that MU doesn't have to pay lesser teams as much as, say, a top 50 team to come to Columbia. But that's going to have to change if we're to have the kind of winning program we all want.
