It really used to be better

In the original days/years of this board during the 2000 election there were no names associated with posts. So name calling wasn't possible. That also had an unintended affect that each post stood on it's own.
There were some actual decent discussions back in those early days, but since Nick gave in and allowed names, it's gone straight downhill.
It has also followed the country being more polarized. There used to be some reasonable middle left posters like marc_tiger that are no longer here.
So it used to not be so much of an echo chamber like it is now where you could actually learn from reasonable people on the other side and think about your positions. But those days are long gone.
