Putin wanted to stop the expansion of NATO. It's expanded.
He wanted to take Ukraine, there are Ukrainian troops occupying parts of Russia.
The conscription announcement at the beginning of the conflict resulted in many Russian men with a brain and skills leaving and Russia was already short in this regard.
Oh and best of all, the Russian military has lost its mystique as being tough and capable. The world knows that's not true now so Putin can no longer play that hand without others laughing in his face.
