It’s a way and can work. There’s a ton of ways to go about roster building. As long as the guys that you have on your team are 1 really good and 2 have complimentary skills then it can work.

Gates uses 10-11 guys every game. So for him a roster that has 2-3 extra players gives him a cushion in case of injuries. A different coach like Cal that really only play 7-8 players wouldn’t want as many players.
