Why should the defense be rewarded on the play?

With a penalty that covers up their mistakes but had no role in the play.

The defensive lineman wasn’t dropping into coverage. He was weakly engaged with an offensive lineman who was falling through on a block

There are legitimate reasons to call a lineman downfield. Like when a lineman is blocking a linebacker and prevents him from being in coverage.

Nothing like that happened on that play.
