The US Navy approved the construction of the John Lewis-class replenishment oilers in 2016 through a $3.2 billion contract awarded to General Dynamics NASSCO. The first ship in the class, the USNS John Lewis (T-AO 205), was delivered to the Navy on July 27, 2022. The second ship, also a John Lewis-class oiler, was delivered on July 11, 2023.
