is same sex attraction, an orientation, not an action. It leaves no room in the interpretation for even homosexuals who have taken up celibacy.
It is an anachronism to read the modern concept of homosexual orientation into the text.
Romans 1, Paul is laying the groundwork that because the unbelievers didn’t recognize God and were idolatrous. The unnatural passions are linked to God causing this to happen or letting it happen. It doesn’t point to sexual orientation from birth because Paul didn’t even have knowledge of that concept.
Romans 2, Paul points right back to the Jews in the Roman church and tells them to not judge because they are also guilty of doing those things. Paul then speaks of the law. But again, nowhere in the law, nor in Romans 1:26 does it speak of sex between two women as unnatural. Sex between a woman and an animal was marked as unnatural. It requires reading verse 27 back into verse 26.
In Jewish writings, there is silence of lesbian sex until the 5th century in Yevamot 76a. And it is only in regards to whether or not a woman who has lesbian sex can marry a priest.
“Women who rub against one another motivated by sexual desire are unfit to marry into the priesthood, as such conduct renders a woman a zona, whom a priest is prohibited from marrying. It was about this that Rava said that the halakha is not in accordance with Rav Huna’s opinion.”
“And even according to the opinion of Rabbi Elazar, who said that an unmarried man who has intercourse with an unmarried woman not for the sake of marriage renders her a zona, a woman who has had sexual relations with a man forbidden to her by the Torah, this applies only to intercourse with a man, but lewd behavior with another woman is mere licentiousness that does not render her a zona, and therefore she is still permitted to marry into the priesthood.”
