Usually the license just has to be presented to the officer, there is no requirement to actually hand the officer the documents.

Hill is required to exit the car (Pennsylvania v. Mimms) upon request. but the officers have to give him a reasonable time to comply. Those cops were looking for a reason to.beat on someone. All too common these days.
