I’d say this non conference schedule is awful and pathetic, but that would be an insult to the words “awful” and “pathetic”. It’s much worse. It looks strangely like the schedule a coach would put together who has absolutely no confidence in her teams ability, and is somehow coaching despite not have a contact in place beyond this year. Hmm.
Here is the schedule Pingeton put together to “challenge” her team, build a solid NET ranking, and prepare them for the rigorous SEC schedule, which is even tougher than last years conference schedule with the addition of 2 top 15 teams in Texas and Oklahoma. And last year we went 2-14 in SEC play. Using the final NET ranking from last year as a guide, here is that schedule:
44 Syracuse
97 Jackson St
118 Norfolk St
130 SMU
136 SLU
138 Vermont
142 Oral Roberts
155 Tulane
197 Lipscomb
226 Southern
240 Western Illinois
244 N. Illinois
245 Little Rock
255 Jacksonville St
We also play either 23 Creighton or 212 Wichita St, depending on whether we beat Syracuse, which is highly unlikely. Which means add 212 Wichita St to the abysmal list above.
Now, there are positives and negatives about using the prior years NET ranking, but it’s all we have now. Some teams will be a better than last year, some will be worse, and many will be about the same. But even with that caveat, this is a dreadful non conference schedule, seemingly designed to rack up a lot of meaningless wins that could put us in spitting distance of 20 wins overall, even with a bottom 3 SEC finish, so Pingeton can go to Veatch after the season, hat in hand begging for a new contract and citing “improvement”, from an 11-19 season in 2023-24.
