Things the way Mizzou does. Some people will call it an excuse, I will simply call it a fact of the matter. Part of the reason for it is that the university of Missouri did not prioritize football the way other schools in the south did after World War II, and therefore does not have as strong of a historical tradition that the fanbase has grown up in. I 1000% guarantee you that with some sustained success and higher expectation of future success we will begin to mitigate some of these reasons for people to choose other activities over football.
I don’t know the schedule or length of deer seasons in other states, but I do know that no other SEC fan base has a lake culture as strong as Missouri. I’m not saying they don’t have lakes and enjoy them, but they’re lake culture is not the same influence on their year, and none of the other SEC lakes have weather that generally makes Labor Day weekend the last reasonable lake weekend.
Scheduling the opener on this Thursday night instead of on Saturday of Labor Day weekend is 100% the right thing to do. But it shouldn’t be an FCS opponent, there should never be an FCS opponent, and even a middling G5 opponent would draw really well.
