My view of the currrent situaiton is whatever their roles have been in the past, Conference organizations now have one overriding function, to obtain, negotiate and administer TV deals in whatever way or ways that maximize TV revenue for conference members.
I suspect that future college football income growth for schools will almost certainly be largely from increased TV revenue from all types of broadcases (live, delayed, streaming, etc) of both regular season and post season games (including a national playoff).
The value of a school to a conference will also almost certainly be determined largely by the size of its TV following/audience and how much revenue that audience generates for the conference.
Conference's primary function will be making and then administrating/managing the TV deals (all kinds and types of TV broadcast arrangements). Their other functions will be largely ancilary.
