in the US & NATO not only intentionally goaded Russia into invading to protect themselves, but they have rejected out of hand Russia's several overtures at peace talks when the terms would have been FAR better.
The longer this goes, the more skin Russia has in the game and the stronger their hand has become. Russia is holding the upper hand and can pretty much call the shots as to the terms. The longer the US, the UK et al hold out the worse things will be getting.
The smart thing would be to start the peace talks right now. It would have been smarter to have done so when Russia first called for peace talks. But the smartest by far would not to have gotten involved and started this conflict in the first place.
