I think you can look at other environmental disasters, and say that when man "does right", the recovery is certainly faster than expected.

I assume we are of similar ages, but there were a lot of dirty lakes and rivers that are running good and clean today. Look at the effect of various oil spills as well, and how good those areas are today (Alaska and gulf of Mexico come to mind).
