easily recruit in-state cornfed farm boys, many of them walk-ons, and just dominate. It required only a couple of breakaway players on offense… a QB and a running back. Everyone else are blocking all game.
They abandoned that, and made it much more difficult on themselves. In a modern passing offense, you need super breakaway athletes at multiple other positions. And it requires different types of blockers.
They took an advantage that made them special and threw it away. They have no advantages anymore. The state doesn’t produce enough talent on its own to be impactful in a spread offense.
And there isn’t a single HS player alive today, that has any memory of Nebraska being anything other than a cellar dwelling joke.
In many ways, they are now what Mizzou became in the 80s and early 90s.
