teacher she knows in a small community said the teachers had organized a small Super Bowl party at the school this year and had some new guests show up. There was apparently a large family or three there of people who didn't speak English, but rather an unusual Spanish dialect which made it a little more difficult to communicate.
One of the men pulled out a huge wad of cash and peeled off some big bills to give her, telling her that his daughter would now be a student in the school and he wanted to give some money in case she ever needed anything.
The teacher was a little taken aback and was wondering if they were involved in any of the drug cartels.

My sister's family has some orchards there and hire some Mexicans to help with the harvest every year. They get green cards and come back every year. Their favorite worker was a young man who begged them to stay longer this year as he was frightened to go back. She told him that they had kept him on as long as they could. His green card was only for 9 months and was expiring. They couldn't legally keep him on any longer.
He went back, but within a couple of weeks or so his brother contacted them through Facebook telling them that his brother had been kidnapped by one of the cartels. He warned them not to try and contact him as it would make things worse for him. He was obviously distraught and said that most of the time persons that this happened to would never be heard from again. But a small percentage would be tortured and then released, and sometimes a body would show up a week or two later.
This caused my sister and her husband and children a lot of anguish. About a week or two later his brother contacted them to say that his body was found.

Several years ago the only daughter of a cousin of mine was killed in a car accident. She was in the back seat with some friends and were stopped at a stop light when a car plowed into them killing her and seriously injuring a few of her friends. The person jumped out of the car and ran and hid in the woods. Police were able to eventually find him. He was an illegal immigrant who was still drunk as a skunk. He had no drivers license nor insurance, of course.

I do think that we should indeed vet the people coming into our country.
