forth by reliable sources? ... Namely that the US had promised Russia friendship and cooperation and that if they disbanded the USSR & got rid of much of their nuclear arsenal, the US would respond in kind... and that NATO would not expand into any of their neighboring countries.

But the US and NATO reneged on their promises. They have been expanding NATO into country after country on their border, putting nuclear weapons in close enough range for quick strikes on Russian cities... and the CIA was involved in overthrowing the Ukrainian president who was friendly with Russia, installing their own guys who were hostile to Russia and to ethnic Russians living in eastern Ukraine. Indeed there were reports that they were shelling them.

Russia kept warning that NATO was pushing them and poking them and that it would lead to war, but we kept it up. We even continued ramping up the aggression, sending Ukraine weapons and "advisors" training their troops for the war with Russia that we were intentionally provoking.

Our goal was to weaken Russia, preferably humiliating them, involving them in their own version of Vietnam. We could fight them by proxy and our military industrial complex could profit handsomely... and, of course, reward their favorite senators and congressmen and presidential candidates handsomely.
