I am actually a proponent of for profit schools. Competition is a good thing, if a for profit school comes in and does a good job they will force the public schools to step up their game.
But keep these things in mind about for profit schools.
1. They do not play by the same rules. They can choose what students to take, dump the problems and simply avoid the costly SPED students.
2. It is not possible to turn a profit everywhere. It is almost impossible to teach 150 kids from some isolated farm community at a profit.
3 schools provide a community service, that is why all fifty state constitutions specifically identify public education as a constitutionally mandated service.
Yes public education can be improved but not as simply as sum of the fools on this board believe. Public schools are a reflection of the communities they serve. There can be no lasting fixes to a school without also addressing the issues in that community.
