regardless of this issue. People are conflating the NCAA's ability to restrict compensation to students with that being the whole and total function of the NCAA.
But an organizing body, whether called the NCAA or something else, is needed to put on championships, generate rules of play, enact consistent rules for eligibility beyond payment, rules governing coaches and recruitment generally, scholarship rules in other sports, and so on.
