it's not *just* because of the buyout.
Wutang has disagreed with me on this several times, claiming that Gates *could* be fired after his 3rd or 4th seasons if things don't improve (e.g.
http://www.tigerboard.com/boards/view.php?message=18973049 )
But to fire Gates after his 3rd season ('25) would cost ~$17M, and to fire him after his 4th season ('26) would cost ~$13M.
That's
not going to happen as long as "NIL" and the portal remain in their current forms, without any restrictions.
In other words, the decision will boil down to:
(1) Burn $13-17M of AD/donor $ to fire Gates, making DRF look like a fool (at best, or even fired).
(2) Keep Gates, and use the $13-17M to buy him an NBA roster in the portal.
Which option is a better use of the money? And which option gives DRF more job security?
In fairness, wutang might be right if (1) we were Texas A&M with unlimited resources, or (2) there were no such thing as "NIL" or the transfer portal...
But until the buyout is under $10M, there's no way Mizzou (DRF and our top donors) are gonna
light $13M+ on fire instead of using it to prop up Gates with a roster that virtually no one could fail with. And in basketball, an extra $2-4M "NIL" per season would go a *long* way. Like, Final Four caliber talent.
And I suspect that DRF will move mountains to make that happen.
