What does the US have to gain from supporting Ukraine?
Vladimir Putin and his minions openly say that they are at war with the U.S., that Russia’s goal is to be the dominant power in Europe and regain the control over the territories of the forever USSR, to establish the new world order and to cause the West to collapse.
“We in the United States are going to have to resist Putin's Russia one way or another,” asserts Fred Hoffman, Assistant Professor of Intelligence Studies at Mercyhurst.
According to Hoffman, at present, America has two options:
Option 1:
The U.S. finally provides Ukraine the types of arms and equipment they need, in the proper quantity, and with their full capabilities.
Ukrainian soldiers do all the fighting.
No US soldiers are put in harm's way.
The cost is strictly financial, amounting to less than 5% of our defense budget.
Option 2:
We sit on our hands and wait until Putin defeats Russia or Ukraine is forced to accept some negotiated settlement and the loss of territory, which results in a temporary peace that only lasts until Russia rearms and re-equips, and Putin decides to violate the agreement and seize the rest of Ukraine.
Putin (or his successor) decide to seize the Baltics, or invade Poland, which triggers Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, which means a NATO-Russia conflict.
The US military enters the conflict; we risk high numbers of KIA and WIA.
The US is at risk of nuclear attack by Russia.
The financial cost is exorbitant.
“Which option you prefer?” asks Hoffman. “You only have 2 choices.
“Yes, for us in the West, China is our long-term threat; but Russian belligerence and expansionism is an immediate threat that must be dealt with — in part to serve notice to China, North Korea, Iran, and Venezuela that military aggression will not be tolerated, or succeed.”
And let’s not forget about other players like Iran, China, North Korea and others who are watching very closely if the collective West has political will, industrial capacity and willingness to defend each other and the international rule based order.
You may not care for the USA remaining the leader of the free world. But you’d have to care if Russia takes over the whole of Eastern Europe and China starts doing the same in Asia, and then they start dividing Africa and South America between them — because the USA decided it doesn’t want to be involved anywhere but inside its own borders.
The free world can very quickly become no longer free, if no one opposes violent dictators.
And then the cost to stop them may be not just financial, but your own life and the lives of your family and friends.
And the U.S. gets to keep its freedoms and exist in the world that lives by the rule of law, and not by the whims of totalitarian tyrants.
