A year makes a huge difference in that the player you recruited may not have progressed as much as another 100 or so players and is not making the hoped for contribution. And the reverse is possible. That's how some mid majors end up with incredibly good players.
And athleticism can dominate in high school and an underdeveloped skill set can be disguised by dunk highlights and size.
