Carter, because even though he plays big, he needed someone to take some of the load off down there. Last year, he thrived next to Kobe, but this year he didn’t have that. Vanover turned out to be a donut hole, Shaw wasn’t ready to take on a larger role yet, and the freshman bigs were freshmen. Nick Honor was disappointing. John Tonje didn’t really play. Grill goes down and even though Bates was excellent offensively as his minutes increased you could tell something was missing in the floor chemistry with Grill out of the rotation. It was a perfect storm. Nothing worked out.
