US/Russia/China are in a new space/tech race. The Chinese balloon was likely a test of the US's detection algorithms in surveillance satellites. The US in the past decade or so has updated a lot of the FLIR on planes and drones and other sensors and supposedly they ignored most 'stuff' under a certain size or with a certain signature, but very recently they updated those detection systems to attempt to spot and ID the smaller stuff. That's when they started picking up the 'balloons'.

The US supposedly shot down one of these over Alaska and it crashed on the ocean ice. They claim they attempted to recover it but the weather was bad and they couldn't proceed with recovery...while a random Wilderness guide in Alaska was taking videos of helicopters and transport jets moving in and out of the area of the crash site for days lol.
