You're talking about my family. When your military ousts political office holders and replaces them with unelected allies, robs banks and private businesses, outlaws unreliable press and systematically torments private citizens through murder, imprisonment without due process, confiscation of property and constant threats, relatively peaceful civil discourse can be attained. At least on the surface.
Much of my family fled to California, Arkansas, Texas and Nebraska. Some returned Missouri and those are my most direct ancestors. Generally, if Missouri southerners kept their heads down and paid the Provost Marshal a cash bond, they might keep their land and homes, though personal property was confiscated by Union soldiers.
