perhaps even instinct, to dehumanize one's opponent before battle. It hypes up one's emotions and energy level and removes any compunctions against killing and maiming fellow human beings. It improves a warrior's ability to fight, and an army to prevail in battle.

It probably isn't quite as useful for fans in the stands, but it's still human nature... before going into battle. ;-)
