completely isolated island nation completely cutoff from natural resources and their own armies in the field. The Russians cut through the Japanese Manchurian army like a hot knife through butter. The only real advantage of actively pursuing the war any further at that point rather than waiting for the eventual surrender of Japan (or finding mutually agreeable terms) was it kept the Russians from occupying the northern island of Hokkaido (which was Stalin's intention). We didn't need to indiscriminately bomb Japanese cities nor did we ultimately need to use the atomic bombs.
