But still more than 1967. What happened in 1968? The Tet offensive. The largest offensive of the war by north vietnam so naturally the casualties were higher. Of the four years with the highest casualties, 2 were under Johnson and 2 under Nixon. While Johnson got us into the war Nixon allowed the US to stay in the war for another 4 years (despite the war's unpopularity) and largely because he shared the same convictions about the US stopping the spread of communism as the democrats.
