The FBI provided conclusive evidence that Bill Self and his staff were significantly cheating and violating recruiting rules. The violations were eventually turned into 5 Level 1 violations against Self, which to my knowledge may be the most ever against a single individual. All of the other programs involved in the FBI investigation have since fired the coaches involved and been significantly disciplined, with 5 of the 6 programs whose cases were turned over to the independent IARP board having been resolved and punishment doled out. Many other programs have applied self punishments for significantly lesser offenses over this timespan in accordance to NCAA member responsibilities.
In charging Self with 5 Level 1 violations for demonstrated and unquestionable cheating the NCAA issued the following statement:
“There can be no doubt the men’s basketball allegations are egregious, severe and are the kind that significantly undermine and threaten the NCAA Collegiate Model. The institution secured significant recruiting and competitive advantages by committing alleged Level I men’s basketball violations. The institution, in taking its defiant posture in the case, is indifferent to how its alleged violations may have adversely impacted other NCAA institutions who acted in compliance with NCAA legislation. Regarding the men’s basketball allegations, very few facts are in dispute."
Not only has ku received zero punishment over this 5+ year period, instead of firing the coaches involved they gave Self a lifetime contract and included clauses that he could not be fired for NCAA issues. We are getting ready to head into the 2023-24 season and still absolutely zero repercussions have been incurred.
I bring all this up because we VOLUNTEERLY schedule this program as a non-con opponent. Every NCAA member program that actually adheres to rules and governance should both 1) refuse to play ku and 2) refuse to accept NCAA punishments until ku receives meaningful punishment and at a minimum Self and Townsend are banned from coaching and results are vacated. GET THIS GAME OFF OUR SCHEDULE. We may as well be playing G-League opponents, ku is not an NCAA program because they refuse to operate within the bounds that all other real NCAA programs adhere to. There is zero reason we should be active participants in normalizing their cheating and pretending they are a valid opponent.
