not the norm in school districts here in the midwest. Don't get me wrong there are many teachers playing these games and most admin are afraid to reign them in but district policy does not support it.
My district made it board policy last year that any student name change requires parent approval. Once we get that our building admin informs the teachers of the new name we may use.
I think it is harmful to kids but if a parent and their teen decide that Jimmy is now a Jenny who am I to argue? But I refuse to play the pronoun game, if a student is asking to be addressed by a different name I strictly use their last name. I have always addressed my students by Mr & Ms Last Name, now I just drop the first part.
I will NEVER lie to a parent no matter what I may be instructed to by an employer. That crosses an ethical line that I refuse to cross.
