hindsight but when you look at what the japanese had done to it's neighbors both before and during the war, the fact that no matter what the "thought" was at the time they had not in fact surrendered and that a ground invasion would have most certainly had to be launched to force a surrender.
I can't look back on a decision made 70 some years ago with the limited intelligence capacities they had and comfortably say it was "needless".
