Since joining the SEC here are the records of our three coaches:
Pinkel 33-19 Overall, 17-15 SEC
Odom 25-25 Overall, 13-19 SEC
Drink 17-19 Overall, 11-15 SEC
Totals 75-63 Overall, 41-49 SEC
Several observations:
- The trend is not our friend
- Odom got fired, yet Drink got an extension/ raise despite having a worse record.
- The overall records are greatly inflated by our non-con schedule against the little sisters of the poor. Playing mid-majors and FCS teams to bolster our odds for bowl eligibility is a ridiculous.
- We could create far greater interest in the program by playing a traditional power in the non-con. I remember historic games against Notre Dame, USC, Ohio State, Alabama, Penn State and Texas back in the 70's. I'd rather attend games these regular season games than go to some half-arsed bowl game against some mediocre 6-6/7-5 team. When playing a middling Big 12 team like K-State is the highlight of your non-con schedule, it's difficult to generate excitement. Attendance was at it's highest back in the 70's with marquee games against Texas and Penn State. Additionally, big time recruits want to play in big time games, not against directional schools from the MAC.
- Today's bowl games are a joke with greatly diminished importance for the fans and players. Players frequently opt-out and most games are played in front of empty stadiums. We haven't even won a lower-tier bowl game in nearly a decade (2014 Citrus Bowl). Getting whipped by Army might have been the low point.
- Under Pinkel we got a great return on investment. Our facilities were sub-par yet our team was still competitive. Now after pumping hundreds of millions into program, the product is worse.
- The numbers don't lie.
