was altered because there was nothing damning on it, so there must have been something bad said that would have been recorded because some guy in the state department, who did not listen to the call, claimed that there was.

Your memory of this was also probably affected by the fact that the chair of the intelligence committee read a completely manufactured transcript live during a hearing which left a lot of low-information people with the perception that it was real - thankfully this congressman was censured by America for his wrongs.
