That's how Europeans first came across potatoes and corn. And the Mayans had a pretty advanced civilization. European diseases decimated the native populations and as tribes moved inland as a result of European incursion, they started warring with existing tribes. The Sioux were not originally nomadic horsemen on the Plains, that culture was a direct result of Europeans and other native tribes pushing them out of their traditional lands.
