Not getting the coast guard involved early.

They probably knew what James Cameron knew, but eventually gave into the media pressure.

I don’t care about the “tax dollars” wasted; they do this kind of stuff for training exercises. If people really cared about wasted tax dollars they’d stop flyovers ant sporting events and air shows. Essentially it is marketing/recruiting for each branch.
